THOSE 2 FLYS!

I have often asked myself a simple question..."If Noah was really wise,why didn't he swat those 2 flys?"...I guess that's a question I will save for God but in the mean time we need to deal with them...as well as all the other flying,biting,annoying critters that abound this time of year. It especially bothers me when we are out enjoying the summer weather to see all those gnats around Stu's face! Well I did some homework and came up with a simple solution...even though it only lasts about 20 minutes, I just keep re-applying it.

If you are like me and have a coffer full of lavender,rosemary and mint you are set...if not a couple peppermint teabags work too....I use fresh but dried will work also. Simply make a "tea" in about 1 cup of hot water,add a half cup of white vinegar...mix and put in a spray bottle! It's really that simple. Make sure you cover your pets eyes when spraying this around their face. I even use it myself....as I mentioned it needs to be re-applied in about 20 mins but just keep in mind NO HARMFUL CHEMICALS! Plus they smell good!!

STARTING OUT SIMPLE

As you know I cook for my dog(s)...I feel,and it's becoming very clear,it is the best for them. I don't like eating chemical laden food and I don't feel giving it to our fur family is the best option. I have been asked what can be done to improve diets in pets even if the owner chooses not to cook at this point.
It's always best to start out simple...once you do you will see it really isn't that time consuming,expensive or troublesome.

Probably the easiest thing is to add Olive oil,preferably Organic,cold-pressed, extra virgin...but any Olive oil is better than nothing. DO NOT add any oil containing corn! We will get into that in the near future. Olive oil contains EFA (essential fatty acids).Over a period of time you should see a difference in the skin and hair condition in your pet. Keep in mind Olive oil is high in calories,but they are good calories...if your pet is over weight keep this in mind. You should consult your vet if you have any questions about this.
I have always fed 1/2 tsp for every 10 lbs. You can start out doubling this if you want to give your dog's system a boost. Then after about 4 weeks cut back to normal measures. I will get into more benefits in adding oils to the diet down the road...this is just a place to start.

Sprinkle some dried Rosemary on the food as well...so many great things packed into this aroma filled herb! It's not just for putting on your chicken anymore. It is full of antioxidants,beneficial for the organs and eyes.

When cooking FRESH veggies for your family...cook some for your dog too (I don't recommend giving them canned-unless it is home canned- because there is added sodium and preservatives). DO NOT add salt or butter to their portion...they don't need it!Never feed your dog or cat warm food...always let it cool to at least room temp. Even though a nice juicy carrot is great for them to chew on the best way is to feed it to them cooked. Dogs can not digest raw vegetables.Cooking them simulates what they would eat (if still in the wild) the digested vegetation in the stomach of the kill. This is how they get their carbs.Some of Stu's favorites are of course carrots but he LOVES broccoli,sweet potato,squash,celery,green bean,peas and yes brussel sprouts.He never knows what I'm going to fix for him...but he doesn't care just so it tastes good.
Foods to avoid! Mushrooms,onions,avocado,grapes,or raisins. They can be toxic especially eaten in a large amount.

I hope this helps a little to get you started in feeding your best friends better. Be proactive in their(and yours)health...a lot of the time vet bills can be avoided...which is a good thing!

THINGS CHANGE FAST AS OFTEN THINGS DO

As you can see it has been a long time since my last post. Sooooooo many things have happened and changed since then it's hard to know where to start.

So I will just mention a couple...

"Kelsie was the Heartbeat at my feet for 6 wonderful years"

To start with life goes on and time heals. On April 27 my sweet little Kelsie passed away and is now running in the flowered fields of Puppy Heaven. We tried everything we knew to keep her with us but in the end God said it was her time to be with Him. (You can read more about her illness here).
If anyone ever tells you that it is silly to have a broken heart over the loss of a pet do not listen to them...for they are the ones that have the problem not you!

So because of Kelsie's illness and special diet needs I have started a Holistic approach to dog care. I am about to launch a line of treats that are actually good for dogs...free of wheat,corn,sugars,salts,dyes etc...
Kelsie was on a high protein diet and was not to have most things that are put into off the shelf food and treats....so I started cooking and making her treats and found that most food that can be bought in the big box stores is basically JUNK! So I have made it my mission to educate myself and soon provide the options I have learned.

Along with the treats I am making collars and toys for both dogs and cats...Things are moving along but slowly....but sometimes slow isnt a bad thing. :)

I'm not totally sure what I am going to call this new venture...I am actually thinking PAWsitives or PAWtanico....feed back is welcome!

Yes it is a strange title but it is the focus of this post. The S 510 bill was introduce by Sen. Richard Durbin [D-IL] I know some of you know about this freedom invading bill that is going through the senate as I type. I won't bore you with all the gloomy details as of yet but in a nut shell what this bill,if it becomes law, will make it ILLEGAL, yes I said ILLEGAL to grow,sell and save fresh produce and seeds!!!

The bill passed the first hurdle yesterday...you can see how your senator voted here. We need to be calling these people until we are blue in the face!

I believe we have the right to a safe food supply but the congress should not be telling us what we do with it! Natural News has a great summary they just put up...read it and weep.

Even if you are not a political junkie like me you really need to pay attention to this bill. It will change our way of life and it will happen without the citizens even realizing it.

If you ever wonder how Washington is "bought" take a look at this!

Do your homework (here is a good place to start!) and become educated to what is going on...our way of life is hanging on the edge of the cliff!

I think the best tip for today is to GO VOTE! As you are doing so please take time to remember those who stood strong and gave their lives so you have that honor! Please don't let these actions by others be in vain...
Thank God that you live in a country where we can do so. So many people around the world would give their lives to be able to vote even once!
Our founding fathers had the insight to set up a nation based on freedom and liberty....and voting is the most important one we have! Let your voice be heard.

Yesterday as I was bringing in the patio furniture it hit me! It was on this day,2 years ago that made a move...into our new home that is. We moved here after almost 30 years in our "starter home" where we raised our 3 wonderful kids.
When we moved in we knew there were things we were going to change and the landscaping around the 90 ft ranch was priority.
BEFORE...

As you can see in the "before" picture we had quite a job...and oh my did we. Being do-it-yourselfers we decided to tackle it on our own. We had several landscapers come,but the price tag was a bit much due to the fact the 30 year old yews were HUGE! Keep in mind they went all the way around the house...a daunting task to say the least.
So we dig in and start our undertaking on Memorial day...and finished it finally on Labor day. We didn't know who was going to finish who first...there were a lot of hiccups along the way with our roller coaster summer but we finally did finish. But now it's 98% finished and we won't have to do it again! I should mention we actually saved thousands by doing it ourselves.
AFTER...

We replaced the ugly yews with dainty boxwoods,roses,hydranges,lavender,mosses and grasses.

HIDDEN WALL...
We think the results speak for themselves. People stop when we are out working in the yard and ask "When did you build that wall?" It has been hidden for 30 years and the neighbors had no idea it was there! Now it stands proudly for all to see :)

TUESDAY TIPS

One thing I have been asked is "How can you afford to eat organic?" Usually my reply is "How can you afford not too!" But seriously it does cost a little more at first... but in the long run not really! I try very hard to be "frugal" and one thing I do notice myself doing is I don't let anything go to waste. If I pay a little more for organic produce I make sure I use every inch of it...so in reality it does cost less.

Tonight is "Clean out the fridge" night...and it is amazing what you can come up with!

#1...Along with the organic,free-range chicken we will be having stuffing...made totally out of leftovers! I had some homemade organic bread and cornbread, organic celery,half a onion, some carrots and a lot of this weeks fresh herbs (from the farmers market)...nothing going to waste!

#2...The ends of the celery and onions along with the stems of the herbs are cooking on the stove and I will freeze them to use as veggie stock. I do put a pinch of sea salt to take the edge off the bitterness. I will strain this before freezing.

#3...A zucchini,leek and half a jar of my canned tomatoes will become a side dish.

#4...Keep those expensive fresh herbs longer by smashing the ends of the stems and putting them in a container of water...and keep in the fridge. Why smash the ends you ask? (This is the florist coming out in me)...woody stems can not absorb water without being feathered....God put bark on stems so they won't become water logged but if you crack the bark your herbs will be able to drink a little water. Just a little tap with the side of the knife is all it will take.

So see you can be frugal and eat organic at the same time. When shopping for organic fruits and veggies go with a plan. Do some research and scan some recipes...write down possibilities. If shopping at Farmer's Markets this is always a good idea because you don't exactly what your going to find.

FROM SCRATCH- NOT A BOX!

This chocolate cake is a family favorite...and even more important it's egg-less! Our little granddaughter has a egg allergy and so everything MUST be made without the little chicken delights.

But you don't have to give up wonderful old fashion chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting.

Even though I stress a low sugar/refined flour diet every now and then you just get the craving for something that takes us back to the way things were at Grandma's house.
There is nothing wrong with that as long as your stomach can handle it! However there are ways to make it closer to your natural/organic foods diet...I am actually going to try making this in with whole wheat pastry flour and stevia the next time...but the one baking right now in the over is just a simple cake to bring back the memories and my son asked for it last night! :)

Here is the basic recipe...I suggest you try "tweeking" it to your liking...

Sift together:
3 cups unbleached flour
2 cups sugar
6 tbls dry cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt

Add and beat for 2 minutes with dry ingredents:
2/3 cup veg. oil
2 tbls vinegar
2 cups cold water

Pour into a greased 9x12 inch pan
Bake on 350 for 35-40 minutes

TUESDAY TIPS

IT'S ALMOST HERE! Jan.1 that is...and time for you know what...the dreaded NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION! Yikes! Usually topping our list is weight loss or quit smoking. I don't smoke so I can't help you out with that one but I can give you a few tips on eating better and modifying your life style. Just a few simple things can get you on track so when Jan 1 comes around you will be a little ahead of the game!

#1--STOP! Drinking that soda or pop or whatever you call it....THAT STUFF IS SO BAD FOR YOU! Not only is is laden with stuff you can't pronounce it's loaded with calories. The "diet" drinks are full of artificial sweeteners that for some reason are approved by the FDA. In other words if you can't pronounce it don't drink it!

#2--The next time you get the urge for that doughnut or bagel with your coffee in the morning think again. Instead keep on hand whole grain and I mean GRAIN, just not whole wheat. Eat a piece of fruit first...before anything. If you must have your coffee sweetened please don't use the man made stuff.

#3--Try your best to rid your house of processed food. A good place to start is with chips,store bought cookies and crackers. Snack on carrots and cukes. Cucumbers actually have a "filling" quality to them and almost 0 calories. Try eating them plain but if you can't use sea salt not iodized salt!

#4--There is something to be said about the old saying "An apple a day"...I find eating one in the early evening does wonders :)

#5--SLIM DOWN your plate. I'm not sure when it happened but America seems to think we need a buffet on our dinner plate. If you actually use your salad plate or even a larger saucer and only fill that plate 1 time you will be amazed how much it will help!

These are just a few tips to get you going,if you plan to start a diet regiment you should go see your health care provider. The tips are my own opinion and not in any way suppose to be used as medical advice! Common sense is really our best healer!

MONDAY MUSE AND CELEBRATION

Today is a day that a few months ago we just didn't think we would be celebrating. Our little lady Kelsie is 6 years old. I know some will think it's crazy to get so excited for a pet's birthday,but we are!

In July right after our daughter's wedding I took Kelsie to the vet because I had noticed a little "hack" after she would drink water. They got her right in that day and I waited and I waited and I waited...finally late in the afternoon one of the vet techs called and the Dr. needed to talk to me right away...so this was the first red flag. Upon arriving at the vet's office Amy took me into a room...the second red flag. Dr Miller comes in and with a look I will never forget,the third red flag....sits down and says "Kelsie is very sick". At this point I knew the red flags were coming together. He took me to the back where he showed me a normal x-ray and then showed me Kelsie's. I was shocked at what I saw...and I know nothing about reading x-rays. Her tiny little lungs were FULL of fluid! It was hard to see her heart...and I knew my precious little lady was on bought time. I looked at Dr Miller and asked him "What are you telling me" his answer is what I had feared....1 to 2 months. At this point I pretty much lost it...but he was so understanding and compassionate it did calm me down ...a little.

My reaction was,"well we will do what it takes!" He said "I knew you would" He explained to us that more tests were needed to pin point just why her protein levels are "deathly" low. To make a long painful story shorter I will jump to our decision.

Several trips to Orchard Park Vet Hospital near Buffalo Ny where they have specialists, and is one of the most amazing places I have ever seen! Expensive? Yes, Worth it? OH MY YES! After 2 stays in the hospital Kelsie was stable enough to do a biopsy on her liver and intestines. Dr Hedges confirmed what Dr Miller had thought...Lymphangiectasia (a name bigger than most of the dogs that get it!) They started her on meds and a special diet and so far she is one that is responding wonderfully to the treatment.

Last week I had her in for her checkup, we are down to once a month and not weekly, and I said to Dr Miller "I guess I am expecting a miracle" he said "YOUR GETTING ONE!"

So you see this is the short version of why today is so special to me...I still have my little lady...even though I know not what tomorrow will bring I thank God for our little miracle of being able to celebrate her birthday.

FOODIE FRIDAY

The canning season is winding down and here in Warren Co Pa most foods were a bumper crop. Since moving here to our new home 2 yrs ago we still don't have a garden...that is next spring's project,after all Rome wasn't built in a day ya know!
I have had to...for the first time in 33 years resort to buying my produce. I found it very easy and economical with all the local farmers and farmer's markets. Everything was perfect and most were raised organically which is how we garden...always have always will (we were "hip" back in the day and didn't even know it!)

In the next few weeks I will show you some of the "Fruits of my labor" and fill you in on some handy canning tips and other Foodie Friday adventures.

This week I'm showing you what can be done with a few basic ingredients. I made this soup/chili with the thought of being able to use it in a variety of dishes.

I do my canning sort of unconventional...in other words I do it My Way!
I use a water canner even though some say you should use a pressure cooker,which I have but I simply don't like using it.

In my chili I used:
**I cooked this for 2 hrs in my large stockpot**

2 cups fresh corn right off the cob
5 large carrots
3 green peppers
2 hot peppers
3 large onions
1 cup red kidney beans
2 cups black beans
(the beans were dry and I simply followed the directions on the package. I used Wegmans' dried organic beans)
1/2 bunch fresh parsley chopped
about 3 tlbs chili powder...make sure it is fresh and high quality...it makes a difference!
salt and pepper and what ever other seasonings you like

If you want a thicker chili just add more tomato paste...it's up to you.

Make sure your mason jars are very clean and free of any chips around the top. Using a funnel fill jars with your soup. In the mean time boil your lids and rims in a pot,being very careful when you remove them...they make handy dandy magnets that will take them out. I don't have one but after 33 yrs of canning I kind of have my own system!
Fill jars only to just below the bottom ring,wipe them off and use a linen not terrycloth so you don't leave any fuzzies...when putting the lid and rims on make sure to tighten them as far as they will go.
Put in your canner and fill with water to well above the highest jar...you will be processing these for 3 hrs so keep a eye on it to make sure your water remains over the lids.
You start timing when it comes to a rolling boil...and yes it seems like a long time but hey good things come to those who wait!

When removing the jars be very,very careful...you are dealing with boiling water remember. Use your canning grippers and put the jars on a towel on the back of the cupboard...DO NOT TOUCH FOR AT LEAST 12 HRS! I cover my jars with another towel,but I don't think this is really a must...I just do it because my grandma told me to!

You will soon start to hear the great little pops of the lids sealing!

Now stand back and take a look at your efforts...it really is a satisfying feeling...and you know what is in it!!

SUCH A PRETTY DAY

Our burning bush is just starting to turn...and show it's wonderful orange berries that the chickadees just love!

I just love mum plants...and so do the chipmunks!

I have no idea what kind of mushroom this is but I can picture a little nymph hiding under it! They are huge...to bad they are hidden under the tree in my back yard, no one can see them.

It was so pretty today I just had to snap some pretties around the yard...I just love all the colors of fall in Western Pa!

PONDERING

A few years ago I was busy making and selling clothing for babies and toddlers.But with all the CPSIA laws I decided to switch gears and venture into something new. I have been pondering the idea of handcrafted organic(botanical)clothing and spa items.

Seriously...have you seen what they do to fabric and expect us to wear it! It's no wonder there are so many health issues! Some fabrics are like a toxic stew!

I would love to know what ideas and suggestions you would have. I have put up a poll but please feel free to leave a comment if you have more to say.

In the mean time I'm off to search for more organic fabric(I already have some and sewing machine is ready to roll)...but you know the stash can NEVER be to big!

TUESDAY TIPS

Here are a few tips that if practiced will become second nature. It really isn't that hard when you stop and think about it but sometimes that "thinking about it" does go against our second nature.

#1*** Wash your baggies! I have been doing this forever and it saves so much trash and money you won't even believe it! (I do use the old fashion waxed paper bags when I can but lets face it they do nothing for liquids!) It is simple,I just turn the inside out,wash,and sit on end where they can drain or I towel dry them and put them away...just make sure you leave the top open so they don't become musty smelling.

#2*** Eventually the bags will get to the point of no return for food use, but wait you still don't have to toss them...I use them to line hanging planters (the coconut mat type) on the very bottom, drainage will sill occur on the side but the baggie will help keep it from running right through. Store seeds in for next year, and even use them as a scrubber...just take a few and wad up in a ball,wrap with a rubber band and presto you have a non abrasive tool. Granted they only hold up to a couple uses but it works!

#3***Don't laugh but I do the same with aluminum foil,well to a certain extent. If the foil has been used lightly just wash it off and dry and there you have a piece for the next time. I can't tell you how many times having these washed pieces have come in handy over the years!

#4*** Look up! Take a look at those lights! If your shade is full of gross dead bugs CLEAN IT! Not only is it not the most pleasant thing but it is stopping the light...that you are paying for...from getting through! Now make sure and use common sense when climbing on a step stool and DO NOT use your kitchen chair! They can tip if your weight is shifted just right...or just wait until someone can help you.

#5***I know glass is easy to recycle but why not do it for yourself? When buying a product off the shelf look for glass..."Only the best comes in Glass" use to be the motto for the glass factory my late father worked in, and you know what it's so true! Any mayo jar can be turned into an instant storage container for pantry products. Ball has come out with great lids that come in 2 sizes, and for a couple dollars you can save yourself from (YUCK) bugs in your food and it will keep things fresher longer. Plus they look nice...much better than the original lid that comes with the product.

Hope you find some of these useful and lets save some money and a little bit of God's green earth at the same time. :)

Every now and then you come across something,mostly by accident,and you wonder "What in the world did I do without it?" I have found such a treasure and at my local Goodwill store (yes I shop at Goodwill and I could go on and on about the awesome finds I have bought but not now) To my surprise when I checked out it was a whopping $.29! Yes you read that right $.29....sometimes I have guilt only paying this amount and now that I found how much I use this cookbook I really do!

Removing the 550 page hardbound treasure from the shelf I noticed it was from Rodale Press...done deal for I knew what to expect.Standing in line I started leafing through the mouthwatering content I was taken back by the information it held! It really is "The Healing Foods cookbook" The best part is that it breaks down the illness or disease into sections. A definition of the disease and what foods you should be eating, the basic food it's self and what it is useful for, recipes that span 14 chapters and a complete menu that target your specific needs.

After getting it home I decided on what recipe I would try and the results were fantastic. Every single one since have been fabulous!

The copyright is 1991 so you might have to do some searching but well worth it.

BUY FRESH-BUY LOCAL

This is the first time in a very long time I am having to buy all my produce to can. When we moved we knew it would be a year or two before we would get to making a garden ...and oh how I miss it..but I will leave that for another day and post.

To our surprise it was a lot easier than we thought to find organic,farm fresh food. We quickly learned that there are a couple local farmers markets and produce stands that hit it out of the park as far as great quality. We relish in the thought of Saturday morning going to the Warren Co Pa Farmers Market and finding FRESH just picked produce! Tomatoes,squash,corn,apples and of course apple cider...yummmmm. By buying your fresh fruit and veggies as well as meat,cheese,eggs and milk you not only support the local economy but you do your body some good! But in reality going for the wonderful conversations you have with the farmers and gardeners far outweighs anything you can put in your market bag!

If you have the ability to buy local you are really doing more than you know! Every day you see in the news how the gov't is going to put so many regulations on the farmer, it is mind boggling and for the most part unjust. I will be venting about this topic in the very near future...I'm still collecting some data...you will be shocked to see what is going on!

So the next time you buy that can of beans,bag of broccoli or yes that dozen of eggs ask yourself 3 simple questions. #1 Where did it come from, #2 How many miles did it travel before it was packaged and #3 WHAT ELSE IS IN IT?! The later might be the real eye opener...

So this weekend before the football games, cross country matches,soccer games take time to do something good for yourself...BUY LOCAL BUY FRESH PRODUCE!

After what I am calling a "Roller Coaster" of a summer I hopefully will be posting more often. I have decided to post the things that make life "tick" so to speak...at least in my world.

I will be posting about my Christian Faith,cooking,gardening,clothing,...all natural and organic of course....thoughts on weight loss,pets,frugal and easy living (we all need to slow down)and MAYBE once in a while the dreaded "P" word...yes I'm a political junkie and I do have my own thoughts about it and I love the fact we live in a country where we all can!

When I come across a product,event or blog, I will give a "Shout Out"...in fact I have done this in the past on my other blog and it is always a huge favorite!

So after one crazy summer of major ups and down I'm going to try to get things back to somewhat normal and do some posting!

A U.K. WEDDING

Every now and then a florist is asked to do a wedding that will be remembered forever. Well I recently did one such wedding. When my bride Melanie asked if we could do a "Celestial" theme I was excited...having never done one before I thought it would be a wonderful challenge and my mind started to spin. The best part was Melanie knew just what she wanted and with several emails across the pond we finalized everything and I got busy searching for the unique elements to put in the design.

At first I thought it would be hard to find the rich jewel tone colors since most places were offering spring pastels. After some searching I found the beautiful blues,purples,and cranberry colors we needed. Melanie was not fussy about the "kind" of flowers I used so that helped...I was not limited...color was more important.

Then came the wire! I think I have found my new favorite element to use in bouquets! Oh my gosh I just love it! When I added this to the bouquets,along with the glass and silver beads everything just popped! It was the perfect accent to complete the package....I will be using it again thats for sure :)

The wedding is this weekend and I would love to be a fly on the wall to see it all put together.

BUY A PRINT- SAVE A BIRD!

We all are aware by now of the BP oil spill that has been so tragic to the people of the Gulf coast. The loss of life from the explosion is so hard to comprehend...our prayers and thoughts go to the families first and foremost. God bless them all!

Every day on the news and in the papers we see pictures that just make us want to cry...and feel so helpless! Well here is a way you can help and have something that will warm your heart with a vision what things were and hope to be again.

I just got a email from my "box maker" and the proto type is ready! Going to head to Falconer ( Jamestown Container Co) later this week to check it out.

We are so excited because this has been the major hurdle we faced...now it looks like we jumped that and are on our way.

I am so excited with the progress we are making...things are falling into place for BOTANICO&COMPANY to start offering FRESH bouquets and other goodies on line! The pieces are coming together, we are starting a website, have wholesalers lined up and the biggest piece was coming up with a shipping container...I am meeting next week to approve a design and start tweaking it to insure your wedding package or celebration flowers arrive in perfect condition.

GARDEN GAZING

I managed to snap a few pics in the garden before the much needed rain.

My little chickadee's are setting up house in a garden house that I painted years ago...I just love these little buggers, probably my all time favorite bird (and being a birder I have a lot!)...maybe it's because they are always happy!

And of course Kelsie keeping watch over everything ...kind of squinting...maybe she lost her sunglasses!

Some days your in the right place at the right time...and this is no joke! On April 1st I visited a thread in the Etsy forums and followed the directions of the moderator ....she had hidden a little April's Fools in her shop. She was giving away a bar of soap to the first person to find it.... I wasn't first but second after she decided to do two give aways.

Today my soap came in the mail and when I opened it I couldn't believe the wonderful lavender smell that came floating out of the envelope! I seriously can not wait to use it...yummmm.

Looking at her shop I thought these pretty soaps that would be perfect for shower favors and gift ideas. Even for the man in your life...check out this cute shaving set!

WEDDING WREATH

What would a Wedding be without the "Circle of Life". This is a special order wreath that will grace the front of a antique wooden door at the cite of the wedding celebration.

I used a variety of beautiful shades of white,creams,and greens in this but they can be made to order in any color of your choosing. These wreaths are wonderful for your celebration and later use them as home decor or if you choose to give as a special gift to someone who you would like to honor.
This can be hung outside out of direct sun and rain...just sooooooo many uses for this. The ribbon can be removed later if you prefer.

SOME PROGRESS

I thought I would give you a quick update on my "Not so famous" Cherry blossoms....as you can see we are making a little progress, slow but sure! It really is a waiting game with these little beauties but so worth it in the long run.

The trees outside are just starting to peek through the branch, so I am a couple weeks ahead of the normal bloom time.

I'll keep you posted on further progress!

As you start to plan your wonderful wedding day your first thoughts usually go to "THE DRESS"...after all this is the most important piece of clothing you will ever wear. You start by buying all the Bride's magazines you can get your hands on...but wait...you aren't exactly a size 0 or your not a bazillionair! You visit all the Bridal Boutiques and realize you won't be the only one wearing that dress on that day...what's a bride to do?? Wellllll enter the wonderful world of the Independent Designer!

You seriously have to look no further than the World Wide Web....and the best www. to start with is Etsy! I joined Etsy in 2005 just a month or two after they first launched with my first shop Bonghi Vestiti. Back then the hand crafted wedding crazy had not yet hit...it is amazing the evolution of this site, and now with all the wedding vendors on Etsy (myself included) it is so easy to find unique,one of a kind,excellent priced items for your special day.

One of the best designer's in my opinion is Cynthia of COLORADA...not only are her creations one of a kind they are very ECO FRIENDLY! This wonderful designer can take just about any fabric find and turn it into a beautiful work of art.

This gown is just one of the beautiful examples of her gowns that she has wonderfully designed and brought to life. I just love all the shades of cream,tans,and white....to me this allows so many options for your accessories and flowers. (I think my Sunset Bouquet would look stunning with this don't you?)

SUNSET BOUQUET

Red is my favorite color and I try to use it whenever I can. Then when I mix it with orange my heart goes a flutter!!!!

If your looking for a bouquet that will stand out in the pictures this one is it! I wrapped the stems in beautiful vintage silk velvet and lace...the contrast is stunning. I don't have much of this wonderful green ribbon, this makes the bouquet even more special.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS ARE COMING

Even though my cherry blossoms are not as famous as some on the east coast, they in every way are just as beautiful. I know mine came from the local garden center and not Japan,I know when they are in full bloom there is a good chance of them getting "a bite" of frost, I know millions will not see them to enjoy, and I know they,like the famous ones last only a couple weeks.

So as soon as the time is right I go out and snitch some of last years "suckers" (do not prune your cherry tree until after they bloom)to bring inside and force them to bloom.

The process is so easy...all you need to do is smash the end of the branch with a hammer like in the picture. Thats it! Because they are a woody stem a clean cut does not allow them to absorb water...that is why they need to be smashed, or if you don't have a hammer you can make cuts about 1 inch up the stem.

When you have all you want simply put them in a pretty vase with slightly warm water along with a drop of bleach, not much just a drop to keep the water from stinking...you will need to change the water daily simply because of that. But believe me it is worth the effort! Now just wait... and......wait....and ....wait :)
But in the mean time enjoy the fresh look in your room.

This can be done with other spring blooming bushes and trees too.

Pretty isn't it...even without the blooms!

CALLA LILY BOUQUET

Always a Bride favorite...the simple but elegant bloom of the Calla Lily is always in style and always beautiful.

These lilies have the look and feel of being real! I had to do a double take and I've been working with fresh for years and years! But no worries about these white blooms turning brown or wilting by the end of your celebration...that is a huge plus!

PAPER ROSES WREATH

{I really should call this "WONDERFUL MEMORIES WREATH"! I can remember sitting at the kitchen table with sticky fingers trying to roll and gather my flowers as perfect as grandma's ...it never happened but she didn't care and she used my creations anyway. She never made a wreath but made stem flowers to freshen up the tired bouquet on her dining room table.

One thing that is different is the fact that crepe paper is about half the size it was in the early 1960's....and we used good ole Elmer's glue, no such thing as a hot glue gun.

I should have counted the number of roses I made for this, but I can tell you I never thought I was going to get all the way around the 10" wreath base!

It is so elegant and dainty,making it perfect for wedding decor, babies room, or a springy gift for someone special (Mother's day is coming)...it is paper so I would be careful if you hang it outside...and please keep it away from flames!

A STONE MANSION WEDDING

In July this beautiful historic house,Stone Mansion, in Fairfax Co. Va will the the setting for a wonderful celebration...a wedding!
Our daughter will be getting married in the courtyard weather permitting that is.
We have started planning the decorations for both inside and out and I must say it will be a simple elegant affair!

Keep in mind you are not limited to the styles and flowers offered in my shop, however a complete package will take some time to complete...please allow anywhere from 1 week to 6 weeks depending on the amount of work involved. We also offer wedding decor,centerpieces,wreaths,favors etc. and don't forget the bridal shower and rehearsal dinner.

Welcome! This is my first post on my new blog about our new shop opening.

Botanico & Company will be focusing on anything having to do with special events and home decor,as well as some spa items using the wonderful world of botanicals. I have been a florist for 16 years and have decided to put my knowledge in that field to work via a new Etsy shop (my 2nd).
I can not even begin to tell you how many weddings and special events I have done in the past...lets just say "a lot". The main goal of Botanico is to provide unique and wonderful accessories and must haves for your event.
We will be using everything from fabric,silk flowers and vintage accents and what ever else we think would be something special.
